In the Holy Bible numbers seem to come up a lot. The number 40 for instance; I wrote about that in another post. But today, I am focusing on the number 3: The number that means wholeness.  I challenged myself to see how many times this was used in the Bible. I definitely cannot name them all but here are a few on the top of my head.

  1. Time that split into 3: Past, Present, Future

  2. When Jesus was baptized, the Holy Trinity was present. God the Father – He said “This is my beloved son of whom I am well pleased. Jesus was present – The second person of the Holy Trinity, and the Holy Spirit – The dove. Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

  3. The Holy Family, Joseph, Mary, and Jesus

  4. Joseph in the Old Testament was thrown into a well for 3 days

  5. Jesus died and was buried for 3 days

  6. Jonah spent 3 days in the belly of a whale

  7. Jesus was tempted 3 times in the desert by Satan

  8. Jesus taught for 3 years

  9. Jesus is represented by the way, the truth, and the life

  10. Jesus asked the apostles to pray with him 3 times in the garden of Gethsemane

  11. The 3 apostles, Peter, James, and John saw the Transfiguation

  12. The same three apostles fell asleep 3 times in the garden of Gethsemane

  13. The 3 sons of Adam are mentioned by name: Abel, Cain, Seth

  14. 3 parts of deliverance of Israel in relation to land. Out of Egypt, Through the wilderness, and into the promise land

  15. Paul was blinded for 3 days by Jesus

  16. When he was 12 years old, Jesus was missing from His parents for 3 days

  17. Jesus predicted Peter would deny Him 3 times

  18. Peter denied Jesus 3 times

  19. Jesus was crucified at 3 o’clock

  20. The sign over Jesus’ head on the cross was written in 3 languages: Hebrew, Greek, and Latin

  21. The 3 gifts of grace: faith, hope, and love

  22. The 3 Patriarchs:  Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob

  23. Jesus asked Peter “Do you love me?” 3 times

  24. Jesus falls 3 times in the stations of the cross

  25. Noah’s 3 sons were mentioned: Ham, Shem, Japheth

  26. Jesus said he would rebuild the temple in 3 days

  27. The 3 wise men

  28. The 3 hours of darkness when Jesus was on the cross

  29. The Lord called Samuel 3 times

  30. 3 angels visited Abraham announcing Sarah to birth a son

  31. The Parable of the Good Samaritan in which 3 people passed by, a Priest, a Levite, and Samaritan

  32. The 3 gifts from the wise men: Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh

  33. The 3 men who were put into fire, Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego

OK, there you have it, 33. You might be able to come up with more.
