Are you Listening?

Early in the morning, the sun was just coming over the horizon. I enjoy watching the sunrise and think I have a new beginning just like the sun. I am a morning person and love to be up early to sip on hot coffee with extra whipped cream while sitting on the deck, feeling the warm sun on my face. I was especially tired this particular morning. It just seemed odd that I would be so tired. I got ready for work and was out the door on time in-spite of my being so tired. The traffic was starting to get busy on the highway, and I had to make it to work to open the store. It usually takes 45 minutes on the highway to get there. I don’t know about you, but highway driving makes me sleepy. The road with the dashed yellow lines are hypnotizing, over and over the same lines on the road. The scenery on the highway looks the same. Concrete and cars is enough to put anyone to sleep. Asleep! No, I was not going to allow myself to do that. I began to pray. Lord God, please wake me up so that I can get to work safely. Immediately after I finished this short prayer, the car in front of me loudly screeched its brakes and slowed down, almost to a stop. My heart pounded so loud I could not hear myself think. In a split second I had to slam on my brakes too. Wow I was awake now! Thank you, God, for waking me up. I don’t know why that driver in that car had to slam on his brakes. Then I saw it, a small rabbit hopping across the road. Yes, I know for sure God had heard me pray and helped me be safe that morning. God speaks to us through prayer.

Another way God speaks to us is through scripture. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John1:1

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. Matthew 34:25

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word, that comes from the mouth of God.’ “Matthew 4:4

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. Timothy 3:16-17

God speaks to us through dreams but when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. Matthew 1:20

And having been warned by God in a dream not to return to Herod, the magi left for their own country by another way. Matthew 2:12

Same as today, dreams can be warnings, and give us confirmation.

God speaks to us through peace in our hearts Did you ever have a decision to make? Of course, we all must make choices by contemplating and praying on a situation until God gives us peace in our hearts. We are doing the will of God. On the other hand, in other choices we make, when we are in a hurry and don’t really pray before deciding, there is no peace because in those times we are picking our own will. Our hearts feel uneasy,

God speaks to us through holy people The Bible is filled with Holy people, Moses, Abraham, Joseph, and many others. In history, many holy men and women are known for bearing the stigmata, the visible wounds of Christ. St Francis of Assisi, Padre Pio, Faustina Kowalski, Fr. Zlatko Sudac, and many more all suffered with this sign. Many of these holy people are also known to have the gift of healing. God directed Noah to build the Ark, and gifted Moses with the 10 commandments. God helps us today. He loves us all. God was and always will be. He lives in all time, past, present, and future.

God speaks to us through Holy Communion at Catholic Mass The Holy Eucharist is the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ. He brings us joy, peace, and love He is talking with us in our hearts. Several saints lived many years only eating the Holy Eucharist: St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Margaret Mary, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Therese of Lisieux, just to name a few. Jesus can sustain us.

God speaks to us through nature Every time I look at the stars in the night sky or at a sunset or sunrise, flowers, mountains, animals, all living things I get goose bumps and wonder would I be worthy enough to face God our creator when I die? Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. Psalm 95:6

God speaks to us through each other Did you ever sense peace when you are in a room with someone? Then there are those in the room that you just want to avoid, and the feeling is uneasiness. Where is this coming from? The Holy Spirit and sometimes the opposite, Satan. It is to one’s honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel. Proverbs 20:3

God gave us two ears and one mouth. We should listen twice as much as we talk.
